On October 11, 2021, the North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Foundation contributed $15,000 to the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission to build the ADA Kayak and Canoe Access at Sutton Lake. This project was developed with the assistance and input of 3 wheelchair bound kayakers who helped design a product that meets multiple needs and accommodates multiple levels of ability and independence. The access provides additional ADA parking with an ADA compliant sidewalk to a kayak/canoe roller/conveyor system. This allows the user to easily slide their kayak down to the dock and access the water. The dock consists of a new, lower to the water level design and has a multifunctional kayak launch platform attached. This platform includes a slide bench and overhead bars for users to get in and out of their kayaks. Sutton Lake was chosen due to it close proximity to a large populations, stable lake levels, low wave action and good fishery.
